Ainol launched the Novo 7 Elf in February 2012. For under $200, Ainol managed to release an Android tablet with some superb features, and quite rightly it sat at the top of the budget Android tablet pile for most of the year. Now the follow-up has been released, the Ainol NOVO 7 Elf II is a similarly low-cost tablet, manufactured by the China company, Ainol Electronics. It might have the same cachet or appeal as its mightily impressive predecessor.
In many ways this is simply down to the fact that the original Novo 7 Elf was so ground-breaking. For example, the Novo 7 Elf II has a 7-inch capacitive 5-point multi-touchscreen, 1024 X 600 pixel resolution just as its predecessor did. Where that specifications was very welcome in a budget Android tablet just a few months ago, now it is much more commonplace and so less of a surprise.
The processor has been upped form 1.2GHz to 1.5GHz dual-core processor, and memory remained unchanged at 1GB of RAM. Also, there is Flash 10.2 support, providing excellent Flash experience for web browsing. This is a plus point in budget tablets now. Web browsing and streaming videos works fine.
Ainol has launched the Novo 7 Elf II with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS), initial impressions on the specifications front are very interesting. What might immediately be irritating is no built-in 3G, however the tablet support external 3G USB dongle. There is 8GB of memory built in, and a TF card slot, as well as Wi-Fi, but no SIM slot.
The capacitive touchscreen is mostly very responsive to your fingers. I needs just simple taps when you want to enter text for email use and you can type relatively smoothly.
The camera has had a boost to 2.0MP up from 1.3MP in the original on the front of the chassis. (The Ainol NOVO 7 Paladin omitted this.). That is good for taking pictures or video chat over Wi-Fi. The built-in Wi-Fi is available.
There is a mini HDMI connector on the device, but you will need to add your own lead as there is no cable included in the box. The HDMI allows you to send output to a suitably equipped external device such as an HDTV, and watch videos on your TV in 2160p High Definition, the tablet is a useful tool for watching video on the go. The Ainol NOVO 7 Paladin also omitted this.
The design and build are identical to the original Novo 7 Elf. The plastic shell is no surprise for a budget device, however it does not feel cheap in your hand. Ports and connectors on the left edge include a headphone jack, an HDMI output, a mini USB, a TF card slot (supports up to 32GB), a power interface, and a microphone.
Ainol has equipped NOVO 7 Elf II with dedicated dual core Mali 400 GPU, so it will play the latest games with vivid colours. The ubiquitous Angry Birds is here, along with a couple of social networks, including Facebook and Twitter.
The 3700mAh battery will get about 6-7 hours of gaming, web browsing, and video playing, about average for a tablet. You will get up to 8 hours of normal use with Wi-Fi off.
Other plus points include YouTube, Gmail, Android Market, along with multi-language support, including English, French, Italian, Spanish, Deutsch, Cestina, Arabic, Simplified/Traditional Chinese.
Overall, coming at such a low price, you cannot expect top-notch features from the Ainol NOVO 7 Elf II, but the second version of this budget tablet is quite the same outstanding device as the original version was. The NOVO 7 Elf is not especially thin but looks nice. It is a good start for the price, if you want to experience Android 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich. This Android tablet PC combines power, performance and style into a package that is both practical and appealing.
