Overview

ASUS MeMo Pad Smart ME301T-A1 10.1-Inch Tablet PC Features

ASUS’s tablet sports a speedy processor considering its low price, and plenty of other plus points. The ASUS MeMO Pad Smart comes with ten-inch IPS screen, delivering an unsurprising 1280×800 pixel resolution, which is slightly outdated for 10-inch devices today, but it is acceptable for this price point. If you required sharp and clear texts and do a lot of reading, it is recommended to buy a tablet with higher resolution. Viewing angles are decent. The screen is not Gorilla Glass, so it needs screen protector. The touchscreen is very sensitive.

The ASUS MeMO Pad Smart is very portable and thin, weighing only 1.28 pounds and 0.39 inches. ASUS doesn’t do the MeMO Pad Smart any favours with its physical design and build quality. It has a plastic body, but doesn’t feel cheap at all. You will have to look underneath the hood to find the good stuff. The MeMO Pad Smart comes with three colours; White, Blue, and Pink.

The quad-core Tegra3 processor supported by 1GB of RAM ensures things trip along nicely, and there is no complaint about the screen’s responsiveness. This is a speedy tablet; it can handle the 3D graphics, so it shouldn’t have any problems with advanced games. It certainly has no issues in ordinary tasks when browsing, reading ebooks, running multiple applications at once, and so on.

ASUS has chosen to provide dual cameras on the MeMO Pad Smart, including a 5MP Auto-Focus Rear Camera and a 1.2MP Front Camera. However, there is no flash, so this is not ideal for photography fans. The seven-inch MeMo Pad has only a front camera.

The battery life is good; you can expect the battery to last the whole day on a full charge.

On board storage totals 16GB; you can add an extra 32GB of your own with a microSD card. With the built-in micro SD and micro USB ports with an additional 5GB of cloud storage from ASUS WebStorage, you can have unlimited expansion options to meet your high storage capacity needs.

It runs Android 4.1.1 out of the box; it will download an update, once it is connected to the internet. It will download and install Android 4.2.1, which is fairly light and easy to use, giving the MeMO Pad Smart a top-end specification.

It is great to see a micro HDMI slot right next to a micro USB port on the MeMO Pad Smart. You will need to buy a cable to use it though as one is not provided. This feature is absent on the seven-inch MeMo Pad.

The dual stereo speakers are located at the back of the device, they sound excellent and in some cases you can hear the vibration, you can fix this by using an external speaker or headphones. Bluetooth 3.0, GPS, and Wi-Fi also feature here.

ASUS adds in some apps designed to help you stay productive and keep organized, including SuperNote, MyLibrary, App Locker, App Backup, and more.

Overall, in term of features, battery, expansion ports, and performance, this ASUS MeMO Pad Smart is stunning. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS all sit on the tablet itself as well. Speedy quad-core processor is nice to have at this price. The screen is mediocre. Compromises have been made to meet a price but that’s countered by some surprisingly good features. If you are looking for a larger screen, this is a good value option; it is a relatively inexpensive way to get the full-ten-inch tablet experience.

Overview

ASUS MeMO Pad ME172V-A1 7-Inch Tablet PC Features

The 7-Inch MeMO Pad ME172V is an entertainment tablet with some good features, and the seven-inch screen is definitely one of them, featuring a 10-point multi-touch display.

ASUS’s MeMO Pad is yet another tablet aiming itself at around $150 price point. The price is quite appealing for a device of this specification, and it fits perfectly for those who can’t afford high end tablets. There is logic to the view, users are looking for quality products, and the Nexus 7 is the target everyone has to shoot at in this price range.

ASUS is quite clear about this being a tablet aimed at entertainment. To that end, the high quality speaker sits on the back of the device; ASUS’s exclusive Sonic Master technology and Maxx Audio are included to deliver high audio quality with explicit surround sound that brings your favourite songs to life. Music quality is certainly better than many devices.

There is also very welcome microSD card support. Having memory expansion means you can boost the relatively generous 16GB of internal storage. In term of look, the device is designed to fit your hand; the backplate is stylish diamond checkered design to ensure a comfortable grip. It is light, coming in at 350g. The MeMo Pad is available in three beautiful colours: Gray, Pink, and White.

You don’t always find a camera on these middle-of-the-road tablets. There is a 1MP front camera, this is hardly cutting-edge stuff, recording video in 720p HD which is good enough, or having a video chat with your friends, featuring an ƒ2.0 aperture which captures more lights to provide better image quality with more accurate colours.

The seven-inch screen makes the MeMo Pad a decent movie player; using it to browse videos and deliver them directly onto your YouTube enabled TV or device. The MeMO Pad allows you to play, pause, stop or even browse for something else while the current video is playing.

The seven-inch screen offers 1024×600 pixels, and it lacks vibrancy and punch to compete with similar devices in this price range. It is not a deal breaker at this price point.

Android 4.1 is a real plus point, and 1GHz processor with 1GB of RAM is speedy enough to see this tablet cope with demanding tasks. ASUS adds a fairly large number of apps in this device including ASUS launcher, MyLibrary, MyCloud, Asus webstorage, File manager, ASUS sync, SuperNote Lite, App Locker, App Backup, and more.

With ASUS WebStorage, you can easily sync and share your online data wherever you want with 5GB free lifetime storage. You can view, edit, and create office documents with ASUS WebStorage Online Office.

Overall, the ASUS MeMO Pad ME172V has some good features. A low price point does mean compromises, and here it is with the screen and the camera. Speedy performance and expandable memory might be enough to make up for it though.

Overview

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 Android Tablet PC Features

Samsung included the stunning screen, and added stylus pen that turns the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 into a comprehensive productivity tool. This eight-inch tablet competes with the others in terms of specifications, meaning it packed with extra functions and the kind of consumer-oriented touches that lift the Note 8.0 beyond the normal Android experience.

The eight-inch screen delivers 1280 x 800 pixels, an average pixel density of 189ppi, however it is sharp and bright. There is a micro SD card slot under a neat cover. Samsung’s WatchON application is your personalized television assistant, so you can use the Galaxy Note 8.0 as a remote control for your TV. Samsung has equipped the Note 8.0 with an infrared port so it will work as a universal remote on both your TV and cable box. You’ll also find Bluetooth 4.0, GPS and Wi-Fi capabilities in the Note 8.0. The S Pen is all important, though. It is nice to see the Galaxy Note 8.0 runs Android 4.12, Jelly Bean, which makes it about as up to date as the latest major Android version, meaning you’ll enjoy a fast, fluid, and smooth user experience.

The versatile S Pen enables you to write, draw, and edit. Extract it and a side bar pops out offering access to various apps. These include Photoshop Touch, S Note (for making notes), S Planner (a diary) and Polaris Office, which lets you view and edit Word, Excel, PDF documents and more. You can download more from Google Play. S Note is compatible with Evernote and Dropbox, meaning it is automatically saving and syncing your documents once you’ve finished.

With a speedy processor supported by a generous 2GB of RAM and a capable 1.6GHz quad-core processor, the Galaxy Note 8.0 is a whole new take on Android tablet computing. You can run up to 20 apps at the same time with Samsung’s Multi Window software, resizing and switching between them seamlessly.

For business users, Samsung’s Enterprise Solutions include security and feature enhancements that make the Samsung Note 8.0 ideal for business use.

The slick and thin device with its twin speakers making a distinctive look that is appealing and ergonomic. The Galaxy Note 8.0 is very portable and light, measuring 5.3 x 8.3 x 0.3 inches and weighing less than 400g.

A 5-megapixel rear camera is comparable to the Kindle HD, but not to the iPad. It can take high-quality photos and videos, and a 1.3-megapixel front camera is ideal for video chat with family and friends.

The Galaxy Note 8.0 does ship with 16GB of internal storage to hold all your documents, music, movies, photos, and more. A generous microSD card slot lets you easily add up to 64GB more storage and transfer data to and from the Note.

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 offers the combo of stylus; some nice software twists and stylish design making this tablet a very attractive proposition. The quad-core processor ensures things trip along nicely, and we can’t complain about the screen’s responsiveness. If you’re looking for a decent camera, you can consider this one.

<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0"><tr><td><img src="" /><td></tr><tr><td><td></tr></table> Coby Kyros updates its popular budget tablet with Coby Kyros MID7065-8; it is one of the more popular budget tablets of 2013. At this price point, it packed with a brilliant 7-inch capacitive Multi-Touch display and a 1.2 dual-core processor, but this is supported by a 1GB of RAM; they at the time of launch were specifications worthy of more expensive tablets. Under the hood the MID7065-8 has chosen to go with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. Slightly behind the times, as Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is very much in the wild, it is still a pleasure to see this version of the OS in a budget tablet. In addition, it also comes with Google Play for countless demanding applications.

The seven inch screen makes the MID7065-8 ideal for web browsing thanks to the ultra-fast Wireless Wi-Fi 802.11 (b/g/n). The MID7065-8 tablet offers full support for Adobe Flash Player, so you will enjoy Flash-enabled websites, watching video and playing games without an issue.
At least the seven-inch screen with its 1024×600 pixels is harp and bright. It is still a pretty good spec as the budget end of the market is still cluttered with far lower resolution screens. The large screen means tapping at the keyboard is a comfortable experience, typing messages or notes is simple and easy with the built-in virtual QWERTY keyboard. Kindle E-Reader is also available for books and magazines.

It is nice to see a front camera on a budget tablet like this one, the MID7065-8 tablet is equipped with a VGA front-facing camera for video chat.

With a generous 8GB of internal memory, you are probably going to boost it with a microSD card for memory expansion up to 32GB.

What you will like is the inclusion of Bluetooth wireless connectivity for hands-free devices and stereo music streaming. Expand your audio experience by streaming music to Bluetooth-enabled speakers or use full size Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.
There is a mini HDMI connector, experience up to 1080p High Definition video with high-resolution advanced media, but to take advantage you will need to buy a cable.

Overall, the Coby Kyros MID7065-8 Internet Tablet is fine for someone on a very limited budget. It does have some good features, and the dual-core processor is a real plus point. A budget price means compromises, and here it is with the camera. However, nice performance, HDMI support, Bluetooth, Google Play, Kindle E-Reader and expandable memory are great enough at this price point.

<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0"><tr><td><img src="" /><td></tr><tr><td><td></tr></table> The Coby MID7046-4 tablet is yet another tablet aiming itself at budget price. The idea is for those who cannot afford premium tablets. Coby Kyros is not perhaps the first name you would associate with a low-end Android tablet, it is quite clear about this being a tablet aimed at internet and entertainment.
There is also very welcome microSD card support; having memory expansion means you can boost the relatively generous 4GB of internal storage. Just insert a microSD or microSDHC card and increase your memory up to 32GB.

At this price range, you will not find any camera on these tablets, there is no HDMI as well. We also expect the plastic build materials we have seen before. Additionally, the Coby MID7046-4 is light and portable, coming in at 315g. We are happy about holding it one-handed for extended periods, which is great for e-book reading.
The 1GHz processor with 512MB of RAM is powerful enough to see this tablet cope with basic tasks, and Android 4.0 is present which means the MID7046-4 just about passes the ‘up to date’ operating system. Coby adds a fairly large number of pre-installed apps to the Android standards, including SlideMe Marketplace, eReader, eMusic, Browser, Calendar, Email, Clock, Calculator, Gallery (Photos & Videos).

The MID7046-4 is let down by a pretty poor display, a 7-inch resistive touchscreen offers 800 x 480 pixels. Website text is not especially easy on the eye, and in general, the screen is acceptable at this low price point. Resistive touchscreens work on the basis of pressure applied to the screen which can be operated with your fingertips or a stylus or any other object, making it useful for handwriting recognition and interfaces with smaller control elements.

Overall, the Coby MID7046-4 tablet is quite appealing for a device at this specification. It has some good features, and the Android 4.0 is a real plus point. A low price point does mean compromises, however a microSD card support for expandable memory and a range of pre-installed apps might be enough to make up for it though.

Lenovo IdeaTab A2107 7-Inch Tablet PC Features

<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0"><tr><td><img src="" /><td></tr><tr><td><td></tr></table> The Lenovo IdeaTab A2107 combines Android tablet features and WCDMA 3G in a single budget device. With the IdeaTab A2107, Lenovo is tackling the Nexus 7 head on. This seven-inch tablet can be yours for only $200 with 16GB storage.

Lenovo is a company with plenty of experience, and the build is certainly impressive. It feels solid, a stainless-steel internal roll cage protects the A2107 tablet’s internal components from damage including dropping and bumping. The black matte cover is soft and nice to touch, and easy to hold, so there is no need to worry about it slipping from your hand. The device is perhaps a little thick and a little heavy though. At 400g, it is going to weigh heavy in the hand if you are thinking of using it as an eReader, and compared with the 340g of the Nexus 7, it is a bit weighty.

This affordable, pocket-size tablet PC allows you to enjoy all your favourite books, music and movies at the palm of your hand. The presence of Android 4.0 is also a bit of a disappointment if you want to bang up to date, but there is a plus in that IdeaTab A2107 has come with various pre-loaded applications.

But the specs cannot match the Nexus. The screen offers 1,024 x 600 pixels of viewing area and inevitably that means it loses out a little in terms of sharpness compared to its rival. It is not dire, but it is not one of those that has you smiling.

The 1GHz Cortex A9 processor is single core affair which is acceptable. The battery is good; it can last up to 10 hours of Wi-Fi browsing.

The good news is that there is a microSD card slot that you can use to augment the 16GB of built-in storage, and it is a Dual-SIM device.

There is a 0.3MP front facing camera for video chat with friends, and let you take and share photos with them. The 2MP rear camera can capture photos with mediocre quality.

The wireless connectivity includes 3G and 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth 4.0, and GPS. With support for mobile data and Wi-Fi you can use this tablet fully while on the move.

Overall, the Lenovo IdeaTab A2107 feels budget, but it does have the advantage of built-in 3G which is nice at this price and that will be a lure for some people. The screen and processor are budget at best. The screen has a slightly lower resolution than many and Android 4.0 is on hand to cater to your needs.

Overview

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0-Inch Android 4.1 Tablet PC Features

The budget Android tablet PC is getting more and more cluttered and it seems plenty of manufacturers think they can deliver good quality hardware at impressively affordable prices. Samsung’s latest Android 4.1 tablet packs in an impressive 7-inch display and has a budget price tag. It both pleases and satisfies your needs. It feels like it is built well and comes with a protective case. The garnet red is eye-catching colour and does not look cheap at all. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) is ultra portable, weighing just 12 ounces.

Samsung has built Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) operating system into the Garnet Red Galaxy Tab 2 and it is powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor and supported by 1GB of RAM. This Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 makes no compromises at this price point and provides the same kind of performance you would expect from the rest of the Samsung Galaxy Tab range. It is fast and smooth. The screen certainly looks great. A bright seven-inch display with a whopping 1024 x 600 pixels on offer is pleasure to work with, although it is not a retina display like the iPad, it is still clear enough and easy to read. The screen is not Gorilla Glass; however this limited edition comes with a good case, protecting it from damage by dropping something onto the screen or carrying this in your bag.

This version is Wi-Fi only, the performance is speedy. As far as Wi-Fi reception goes, you can access the Internet and stream media over your home network via ultra-fast Wireless-N Wi-Fi. The Adobe Flash Player 10.1 is also available for accessing Flash-enabled websites, watching video and playing games without any compromise. In addition, this Galaxy Tab 2 also comes with the Smart Remote app and built-in IR Blaster, so you can easily control your TV content and all from this portable device.

The Galaxy Tab’s virtual QWERTY keyboard is ideal for typing messages. The device boasts two cameras including a VGA front-facing camera for video chat, and a 3MP rear-facing camera for photo capture. Admittedly, the camera on the Galaxy Tab 2 cannot really compare to a real digital camera but having the camera available on the Tab 2 is still a plus point, due to the Kindle Fire lacks an on-board camera while the Galaxy Tab 2 offers both a front and rear-facing cameras.

There is 8GB of internal memory, and you can add more storage via microSD card slot (for up to 32GB of expansion via optional cards). Bluetooth 3.0 and GPS also feature here. Unfortunately, there is no HDMI output.

Other interesting features including Google services, Samsung apps, Samsung Hub widgets, and additional apps and services include Amazon Kindle, Polaris Office, Dropbox, and Netflix.

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 Garnet Red Edition is a fantastic tablet. Its low price and stunning display make it more appealing than any other seven-inch Android tablet available. With a high-resolution screen the device makes a great eBook reader, and a great mobile web tool.

The Samsung ATIV tablet measures 0.4 x 6.6 x 10.5 inches (D x W x H) and weighs 1.3 pounds.

Overview

Samsung ATIV Tab GT-P8510 10.1-Inch Tablet PC Features

Samsung’s ATIV Tab proved such a surprise hit that the company has not only produced a follow-up tablet but also a spin-off in the form of a fully functioning PC. It is driven by a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and a very generous 2GB of RAM, this tablet seems to fly along.

Physically the ATIV Tab is an ultra-thin tablet. There are the front-mounted speaker grilles and this is the best location for gaming and movie watching than speakers on sides or at the back of the slate. The front-mounted speaker grilles are located in the upper half of the tablet, so your palms will not cover them while using it. Samsung has not worked really hard to make the ATIV Tab look very different. Its design looks similar to the Galaxy Note 10.1; however it does manage to feel better and look better. Build quality is acceptable and its plastic might be prone to scratching, so a case will be necessary. The back of the ATIV Tab is nice to touch and has a brushed aluminum look with a premium feel.
The screen delivers 1366 x 768 pixel resolutions; it is very bright at 400-nits and most definitely clear enough for everyday working. Viewing angles are impressive.

The core specifications are solid, with Windows 8 RT powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and 2GB of RAM in support. That is double the amount of RAM you have seen even in high-end devices. This version is 32GB of storage, which is expandable via a microSD card slot for adding more. On top of the tablet is fully packed with buttons and ports including a micro HDMI output and a full-size USB 2.0 port; both are covered under the same plastic lid. You also find the memory card slot under a cover. There are also the 3.5mm audio jack along with a lock/power button and the volume rocker on the top of the tablet.

Additionally, if you are going to do a lot of typing, there is a port for connecting an optional keyboard at the bottom. With a hinge hole on each side, you can firmly attach the keyboard to the tablet. You can connect a mouse via the USB 2.0 port. Alternatively, you can also use a wireless Bluetooth keyboard for convenience.

Unfortunately, the Samsung ATIV Tab does not charge via USB port, it uses a proprietary connector for charging only, it is found at the bottom left. The 8200mAh battery delivers a longer battery life, it will get you through a day of use.

The Samsung ATIV Tablet runs the programs you need on a Windows 8 RT operating system. There are a couple of other goodies on board. You can create, edit and share documents with Microsoft Office RT suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and more, along with Music Hub, ChatON, Family Story and more are the full set. Browse the web and run apps at the same time.

Microsoft has done a great job of redesigned a rich and complex Windows 8 into a touch-friendly and easy-to-use everyday companion without compromising its capabilities. This outstanding user interface allows you to personalize your desktop, making all your favourite people, apps, movies, photos and websites easy to access, and come alive with tiles that update your info in real time

With SkyDrive, you are connected to the cloud wherever you go, so you can easily store and access your files, photos, videos and more on the move. Sync all everything you want including calendars, contacts, messages, email and other files via Microsoft SkyDrive, plus run all your favourite Windows 8 apps and games.

Overall, the interface is impressive and easy to use. The split-screen feature allowing you to accommodate two apps at a time. It is user friendly and good-looking. The ATIV Tab is not the most powerful hardware but it is a solid device. Plenty of pre-installed apps to keep you occupied, as well as Windows Services. With ATIV Tab, you are now looking at a device that can finally support high-resolution screens, NFC and multi-core CPUs, so this tablet is every bit as rich and powerful as Android.

There is the issue with apps as well, Windows as you know it is gone, Microsoft’s app market is hopelessly behind Apple’s and Google’s, however Microsoft finally has the consistent cross-device ecosystem that will be increasingly hard for developers to overlook.

Some Android apps seem to want to access your data on your device before they will run. Some applications need to read your contact data. This will allow your app to access the contacts stored in your device and make additions to them. Social networks, contact management apps, SMS apps need to do this, leading many to question whether or not they are actually spying on you. However, if you feel uncomfortable about it, do not allow an app to access your contacts.

Why would an app need your contact information? An app might want to offer a simple share function so you can recommend it to your friends. Most of the time those permissions are needed in order for the app to function to the best of its ability. An app might rightly need those permissions it is asking for, so it certainly will not be used for spying. It is clear that you may have little to worry about an app is spying on you.

Some apps can read, write and delete anything which is stored on your device’s SD card. These apps will need to store data on the SD card and will ask for permission, so you need to be sure of the purity of the app developer and that access is necessary.

Whether those apps are reading your device status or modifying your SD card, they can appear rather intrusive at times and it is not just the Facebook app that comes under such criticism, but other apps also want this level of access.

Developers believe the risk really is minimal but that companies need to be more open and treat data with care and a bit more respect. It would be better if apps were more open about why they want your information, why do apps need permissions such as access to your messages and phone calls? Some developers kindly explain that full internet access is needed to access Google Tasks, it needs to modify and delete SD card contents to store backups, and it needs access to directly call phone numbers for its missed call feature and so much more. Intelligent apps look like they know why they need to have access to the information we supply through the device.

Others will point to the data that Google collects and question why it needs it. Google says that it keeps information you give it such as your name, email address, telephone number of credit card. It will keep your profile photo; collect your hardware model and mobile network information including phone number. It will gather details of how you use its services, such as your search queries and log-in information. It is possible for Google to pick up information from your email and search. It even knows the websites you visit and the YouTube videos you watch.

What does Google know about you, and how can you take back your data? To be transparent and offer the user control over the information Google has on users, Google Dashboard offers a simple view into the data associated with your Google account. Cookies are used to improve your user experience. When you contact Google, it may keep a record of your communication, what Google knows about you and it also offers options to edit details and delete them. You can configure what you want Google to know about you with the Manage options.

All in all, it comes down to take your own precautions, using common sense and thinking carefully about which applications you should install and what websites you should visit on your device. Doing this, you are able to limit the potential for threat. Using your Android device is a great experience, being responsible for your own online welfare will make it even more pleasure in the long term.
